Cadets Fly High!!

September 5, 2020

1st Lt Chedrin Chambers of the Detroit 100th Composite Squadron flew down to Monroe Custer Airport Saturday to help our Cadets fly to new heights!

Cadets Holloway, Bielak, Trpevsky, Wright, Poreda and Schossau experienced the magic of flight as Lt Chambers took them on orientation flights in a Cessna 172, with all but Wright taking to the skies for the first time with the Civil Air Patrol.

Orientation flights are a great opportunity for Cadets to experience the thrill of flight, but are also a great educational opportunity as well. Cadets are allowed 5 powered and 5 glider flights prior to their 18th birthday, and each flight has a different syllabus, so Cadets have the opportunity to learn something new with each flight.

The flights start with a thorough preflight check of the aircraft and a safety briefing before taxiing out to the runway. Flights last around an hour, with one Cadet in the "copilot" seat and the other in the back, the front seat Cadet having the opportunity to actually fly the plane one airborne.

After an hour, the plane landed in Adrian, where the Cadets switched seats before taking off for another hour, with a new Cadet handling the yoke.

The Cadets were all smiles as they finished their flights, although you could barely tell with the masks. Following each flight, the plane was thoroughly sanitized before the next group of flyers arrived.

More Cadets will have the opportunity to take to the skies on Saturday, September 19th as Monroe's own Captain White takes five more Cadets on orientation flights!
